Call for Papers

The Great Books are both widely read and widely debated. Many of the debates hinge on the idea of the canon, which is both loved and hated. But what are the Great Books? And what can we say about individual books in the category, or excluded from it?

The inaugural Florida Great Books Conference will be held at Palm Beach Atlantic University on February 26, 2027. We invite proposals for thoughtful paper presentations by undergraduate students on the Great Books. We anticipate lively discussion, animated presentations, and earnest inquiry into the nature of the Great Books.

This is an inaugural conference and we are casting a wide net for topics. Papers can address the Great Books in a variety of ways. Topics may include: What qualifies a book for this category? What, if anything, unites the books which we consider to be among the Great Books? Papers may also consider the relationship between the Great Books and their cultures of origin. Papers do not need to consider the Great Books collectively. Papers about a single text are welcome, including books which are often excluded from the category of the Great Books. Presenters may make an argument for the inclusion or exclusion of an individual text from the category. Papers may also consider the effects of one or more of the Great Books, on individuals or history and culture. This is an opportunity for students with shared interests to present their work and enjoy conversation.

Undergraduate students from all disciplines are encouraged to apply. Student paper abstracts of 500 words should be submitted, with a one-page resume, to FLgreatbooks@gmail.com by December 1. AI-generated submissions will be rejected. We are interested in authentic student voices. If you would like to attend, but not present, please email to receive more information once the registration page is live. The conference will also include sessions for K-12 classical educators, reflecting the significance of teaching the Great Books in Florida.

Join us for great conversation.
